Nysa, also called Pathaunisa, was the first capital city of the Parthians. It is located in Turkestan - part of the former Soviet Union.
Founded by the Parthian king Arsaces I (c. 250-211 BC), it was the royal centre and main place of residence for the early Parthian kings. Excavations have revealed substantial buildings, inscribed documents and many treasures and works of art, including a large number of ivory rhytons (drinking vessels).
Much of this art work shows Hellenistic influences. The outer rims of the rhytons were decorated with Iranian subjects or scenes from Classical mythology. As at Hatra, the art and architecture of Nysa reflected the fusion between Western and Iranian styles.
